Mitch Marner gives in on social media, defends against trolls

Mitch Marner makes smart but sad decision on summer social media post, showing reality of life under the microscope

In all of this contractual madness, you kind of lose sight that Mitch Marner is just a 22-year-old kid. Well, with his current contract situation in Toronto, it looks like the playmaking, homegrown, star winger has yielded to the social media trolls.

Seen below, Marner is enjoying his summer vacation by shredding some boat wake waves and throwing down a few 360 spins on his wakeboard. The reason this is interesting? No commenting allowed:

Well into the tens of thousands of likes, Mitch is just trying to live his life and share a pretty cool video of him having a rather Canadian summer. Ripping the water sports on a nice lake during a hot, sunny day is almost a right of passage or part of the Canadian DNA. Superstar status or not, Marner is is enjoying his time off as much as us normies do.

It’s a shame that he has to limit the comments on his post because he knows it’ll be filled with passionate fans, armchair GMs, and/or social media trolls giving him advice or begging for his signature.

His contract situation is well documented, but we’re all just guessing about what has or hasn’t been discussed, or is the fated offer sheet is on its way. We don’t know anything about the negotiation but so many people have already decided he’s greedy or needs to calm his rumored demands.

Long story short, we’re in the dark until something concrete is released. The side effect is that a 22-year-old hockey player has to turn off commenting on his personal Instagram because he knows the trolls won’t make it worth it. What a world.

Avid fan of The Toronto Maple Leafs, West Ham United, Minnesota Vikings, and Toronto Blue Jays. Involved in all things sports from playing (poorly) to tracking on twitter, my love for the teams I support tends to bleed into all aspects of my life!

…..but he and his agent are also very greedy……!

    • We’re all just making assumptions! Crazy how everyone loved him a few months ago now he’s evil because the hockey world has gone quiet on him

Magic Mitch is the Man! It will all get sorted out soon enough. Have faith & BeLeaf! I say a little prayer every night that Mitch will sign for an 8 yr term. For me the $’s don’t matter as much as term. We all know its $10M or more/yr, that’s more than enough for anyone. Stay in your home city with all of your friends & family thats just as important as money. We have all loved watching you excel through the yrs & continue to prove all those doubters wrong. By far one of the best TML’s to ever wear the original 6 blue & white. That means more than most, it’s iconic! You have got it all! Stay & simply soak it all in & continue loving life!
It’s all there, right in front of you…
Makes us all proud TML fans for at least another 8 yrs PLEASE 🥰

He deserves the same money as Matthews. His contribution was at least equal and possibly better. Advice to Mitch, sit down one on one with Dubas, he will be fair with you.

    • Angelo Mantzios

Not a chance he deserves Matthews money. Matthews was a beast in the playoffs and Marner was a non-factor. He had one goal on a penalty shot? Then *poof* vanished!

In the shifts Marner didn’t play with Tavares, Tavares’ numbers didn’t drop. In shifts Tavares didn’t play w Marner, Marner’s numbers dropped 40%!

Marner is a good player, no doubt. But Tavares makes him way better. 9-9.5m tops.

      • Agreed Angelo. He is great. But he needs a Tavares type line mate to produce great numbers. Matthews is another level. That said, Marner is probably my favorite leaf. But favorite doesn’t mean best. And I agree with your numbers too. 9-9.5 million should be his range. If an offer sheet comes where we get 4 1st, I hate to see him go, but don’t let him ransom you for a couple of million dollars and likely another player or two swapped out to fit him in.
