NHL Toronto Maple Leafs

How the Leafs match up Man-for-man with the Lightning

Tampa Bay lead the league in offensive production and sit atop the standings. Toronto is closely behind in both catergories; here's how the teams stack up.

Two of the most electric (pardon the pun) offenses in the NHL, the Toronto Maple Leafs and Tampa Bay Lightning face off tonight. How do the Leafs’ key players match up against the league leaders?

Goalies

Maybe the closest aspect of the two teams is their impeccable goaltending. Both Andrei Vasilevskiy and Frederick Andersen have been lights out this season with Vezina contending seasons well underway.

For teams that commit to offense as heavily as these two, having a stellar goalie isn’t just important, it’s the lynch-pin to the teams’ success. Having a solid defensive core can mask a sub-standard goalie, and both of these teams do have just that, however, they too are offensively minded. This reasserts the importance of the goalie.

The edge has to go to Vasilevskiy, as thin as the margin may be. He’s got Andersen beat with a 2.24 GAA, .931 save percentage, and 6 shutouts. Andersen does have him on wins (33 to 31) and is close behind in save percentage and GAA, but statistically speaking – advantage Tampa Bay.
